I plan to use the car as a daily driver. My commute to work is 40-50 miles round trip. Is the 530 severely under powered to the 540? Or will the 540 be a headache in the long run for maintenance? This will be my first BMW.

Get the 530i. Plenty of power, less maintenance and headache, better gas mileage, more room under the hood to work on it.
